Lecture: From Boom to Bubble? Impacts of China’s macro policies
in 2010 Shanghai Information Session
For Tsinghua-INSEAD Dual Degree EMBA Programme
At the information session , Dr. Ruipeng DI , Associate Director of EMBA Programme, Tsinghua SEM will share with you the distinctive features of the Dual Degree EMBA Programme jointly run by the School of Economics and Management , Tsinghua University and INSEAD.This will be followed by a lecture by Mr. Sitao Xu, Chief Representative of the Economist Group in China and Director of Advisory Services for the Economist Intelligence Unit—
China’s highly-touted stimulus package is credited with bringing China’s GDP back within shooting range of its 2009 target , and for keeping the economy on track. But there have been side-effects which are now coming to light, in the form of asset inflation and a delay of industry rationalization. For instance, accommodative monetary policies have enabled real estate to continue as a pillar sector driving domestic demand and fiscal revenues, but now, with mounting signs of speculation , it’s showing signs of being a bubble. And the reassertion of state control is delaying needed shake-outs in key industries such as steel and real estate. The price will be paid in the years to come.
Has asset inflation in China reached dangerous level? Could China turn into Japan two decades ago? If Beijing decides to cool down the property market, what tools might it use ? What can China learn from the countries and economies which have experienced economic dislocation after bubbles burst? Should and will China revalue the RMB in response to the build-up of external pressures? If China steps up efforts to diversify consumers’ investment universe (options), as a way to take heat off asset prices, what would be the impacts regionally and globally?
